If you want to try Transport Guide kayaking, the Zrmanja river is an ideal spot. The commercial tours use stable sit-on-top kayaks or canoes and include a full safety briefing. With manageable water flows in summer, it is an accessible activity for active families and beginners.
What kind of rapids will I face?
The Zrmanja features class II and III rapids, which are mild to moderate.
Class II and III rapids mean there are clear channels and small waves. Guides give you instructions on how to steer through them. In summer, the flow stays at or below 13.4 m³/s, making the water very manageable. For higher water, see Best Time for Rafting.
What equipment do tours provide?
Operators supply stable kayaks, paddles, life vests, and helmets.
You do not need to bring your own gear. By rule, all participants must wear the provided helmets and life vests. You sit on top of the kayak, making it easy to hop on and off. You just need to pack a swimsuit, water shoes, and sun protection.

Is it safe for children?
Yes, children aged 6 and older can join most kayaking and rafting tours.
Kids under 6 are generally not permitted on white-water river tours. Older children will share a two-person kayak or canoe with an adult. The guides ensure everyone is comfortable before starting down the river from Kaštel Žegarski.
Do I go over the high waterfalls?
No, you do not kayak over the highest waterfalls like Visoki Buk.
Jumping or paddling over large drops is prohibited due to dangerous rocks. At the 11-meter Visoki Buk, guides will have you exit the kayak and walk around the falls. You can still swim safely in the calmer pools below the cascades.

When is the best time for kayaking?
Summer (June to September) is the best time for kayaking on the Zrmanja.
During these months, the water level is lower, making it perfect for sit-on-top kayaks. If you visit in spring or autumn when the flow exceeds 13.5 m³/s, the operators will switch to large rafts instead.
| Season | Water Flow | Activity Type |
|---|---|---|
| Summer (Jun-Sep) | 13.4 m³/s or less | Kayaking (sit-on-top) |
| Spring/Autumn | 13.5 m³/s or more | Rafting |
How long does a kayak tour take?
Most kayak tours take half a day, typically around 4 to 5 hours on the water.
Tours start around 10:00 AM at Kaštel Žegarski and end at Muškovci village. The pace is steady with stops for swimming and resting. The zrmanja river kayaking usually costs from €62, not including optional van transfers from Zadar.

Questions travellers ask
Can beginners kayak the Zrmanja?
