Your experience on the Zrmanja river depends entirely on the season and water volume. High water brings class III rapids suitable for rafts. Summer heat reduces the flow, turning the river into a calmer route for sit-on-top kayaking.

When is the Zrmanja rafting best time?

The best months for rafting are April, May, and October.

During late spring and early autumn, the river flow usually exceeds 13.5 cubic meters per second. This higher volume allows operators to use full-size rafts. The class III rapids are active, but they remain safe enough for beginners. If you visit outside these months, you likely will not be able to raft.

What happens during the summer months?

From June through September, operators switch exclusively to sit-on-top kayaking.

Summer water levels drop to 13.4 cubic meters per second or less. The river flow is too low for heavy rafts to navigate the shallow sections. Instead, you paddle the canyon route using inflatable two-person kayaks or canoes.

How do water levels compare between seasons?

Spring and autumn provide fast currents, while summer offers warm, slower-moving water.

The volume of water determines your craft and the intensity of the rapids. Tour operators monitor the gauges daily to decide the safest and most enjoyable way down the 200-meter deep canyon.

What if I book rafting and the water is low?

Operators automatically provide two-person inflatable kayaks instead of rafts.

Weather patterns dictate the exact river levels. If the river drops below the 13.5 m³/s threshold on the day of your tour, you will still run the canyon. The kayaks handle the shallower class II/III rapids easily. Guides provide helmets and life vests regardless of the vessel.

Is the water cold during the rafting season?

Yes, river temperatures in spring and autumn are lower than the 20°C summer average.

Because you raft in April, May, or October, expect cooler water. Pack quick-drying athletic clothes and a change of dry clothes for the ride back to your accommodation. You will need water shoes or secure sandals for the rocky riverbeds.

Can children go rafting during high water?

Children must be at least 6 years old to participate in commercial white-water tours.

This minimum age applies to both rafting and kayaking on the Zrmanja. Safety rules are strictly enforced. All children must wear provided life vests and helmets while on the water.
